God’s Promises - The Rainbow

Genesis 9

God has given us many promises in the bible.  Let’s look at a one of them.  Read the story of Noah together as a family trading off sections, Genesis chapters 6-8.

Answer these questions as you go:

1) What was man up to? – Genesis 6, 5 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.  11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence.

2) How did God fell about it? – Genesis 6:7, The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. . . .

3) What was God’s plan? – Genesis 6:8, So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air

4) What did he ask Noah to do? - Genesis 6:14, make yourself an ark of cypress wood

5) Who shut the door to the Ark? – Genesis 7:16, Then the LORD shut him in.

6) What happened next? – Genesis 7:24, The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

God made it rain for the first time and a flood covered the whole earth.  As a little background, most scholars believe that it had never rained before the flood.  God watered the earth with mist, dew, and with other means, just not rain.  So when it started to rain, this was something new to all the people.

God flooded the earth for 150 days, man was gone except for Noah, his family, and all that he brought aboard the ark.  God then dried up the land, let everyone out of the ark, and blessed Noah and his family.  Finally God made a covenant, a promise with Noah and the rest of us

Now, lets look at the promise God made.  Chapter 9 verses 8-17.

11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."

13I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Scholars also believe that the word for Rainbow was also used for “Bow” as in bow and arrow that God used to go to war against man.  God put down his arms or “Bow” in the clouds

Think about this promise, this is huge!  If God didn’t give this promise to never flood the earth again, every time it rained - everyone would be running for hills thinking God was not happy and was going to flood the earth again.  Be he did promise.  Wow, I’m glad he made that promise and that He keeps his promises or all of us would have to keep both umbrellas and boats!!!

To this day we see God keeping this promise, we have rainbows in the sky and no world-wide floods.  God keeps his promises, the rainbow is proof.

What other promises has God made that he also keeps?  Look up each scripture.

·   Hebrews 13:5 – God will never leave you or forsake you.

·   John 10:28 – No one can snatch you out of the hand of Jesus

·   John 14:16-17 - Give us the Holy Spirit
