My God Made Your God!

Genesis Chapter 1

At the time the book of Genesis was written, people worshipped all kinds of gods.  The Egyptians worshipped animals, the sun, moon, and stars, all as gods.  Many scholars believe that the first chapter of Genesis was a declaration to those in the land that the God of Israel, the one true God, made everything including their gods.

Here's a few of the Egyptian God's that were worshipped at the time of Genesis:

Bast
Egyptian cat goddess
Chons
Egyptian moon god
Geb
God of the Earth
Hathor
Egyptian cow goddess
Nut
Egyptian goddess of the sky and of the heavens
Osiris
Egyptian god of the underworld and of vegetation
Re
Egyptian sun god
Selket
Scorpion goddess, helper of women in childbirth
Shu
Egyptian god of the air
Sobek
Egyptian crocodile god
Taweret
Hippopotamus goddess and protective deity of childbirth
Thoth
Egyptian moon god

So from this point of view, let’s look at Genesis Chapter1 and tell the story as the people of Israel would have told the people of Egypt that “My God Made Your God”!

[Note: Trade off asking a question and then giving the response.  Have fun with it!]

Question to the people in the land: You worship the earth and the land?

Your Response to them: My God created the earth!   Genesis 1:1-2

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Q: You worship the sky and the ocean?

R: My God made the sky and the ocean!  Read vs 6-8

6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

Q: You worship the land (mother earth) and the water (Nile River)?

R: My God made the land and the waters!  Read vs 9-10

9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

Q: You think all the crops, trees, and fruits are because of your god!

R: My God made your crops, trees, plants, and fruits!  Read vs 11-12

11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Q: You giver offerings to your gods to bring you spring and summer come?

R: Well My God made the seasons!  Read v 14

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years

Q: You worship the sun and the moon as gods?

R: My God made your gods! Read vs 16-18

16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night . . . .  17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.

Q: You worship the stars in the sky as gods?

R: My God made the stars in the sky!  v 16

16 . . .He also made the stars.

Q: You worship birds as your gods and pray that they bring you good catches of fish?

R:  My God made the birds you call gods and it’s My God that made the fish! vs 20-22

20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth."

Q: You worship animals as your gods – cows, cats, dogs?

R: My God made your animal gods! vs 24-25

24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Q: You worship your kings and gods!

R: My God made your kings and all man! vs 26-27

26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

R: My God is bigger than your god, My God made your gods and everything else.  In fact when my God got done making your gods He said to Himself, “Cool, good job!”  vs 31

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

R: Then he kicked back, put his feet up, and rested cause He had made it all!  Chapter 2:2

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

R: So the next time you go worship, or pray, or give sacrifices to your gods.  Remember, your god is not that great because –

“My God made your god!”
